The Tar occurrence is located on the eastern side of Lyell Island and south west of the Tar Islands.

The area is underlain by feldspar porphyry of the Lyell Island plutonic complex (Kano Plutonic Suite).

Locally, pyritic and silicified zones host gold values. In 1979, a sample assayed 1.86 grams per tonne gold, while the following year two samples yielded 0.56 and 0.66 gram per tonne gold, respectively (Assessment Report 08353).

In 1979 and 1980, J.C. Stephens Exploration completed programs of geochemical sampling and geological mapping on the area as the Tar claims.
